How to Transfer Music From Old iPod Into New One

August 21st, 2006

iPod PlaylistTo move the songs from your old iPod into new one, you have two options. Do it manually or download third party software that will do it for you. The Apple Company doesn’t want users to share music on internet so they make it hard for users to transfer songs onto computer.

Follow the directions below to do it manually:

    1) Make sure your iPod is plugged into your computer. Then go to My Computer and go into your iPod folder
    2) In the window menu option, click “Tools” -> “Folder Options” and click on the “view” tab
    4) Scroll down until you see the heading: “Hidden Files and Folders”
    5) Below the heading, click on “Show hidden files and folders” and click OK to exit out of that window

Now find the folder named “iPod Control” in your old iPod. Copy and paste the folder named “iPod Control” from your old iPod to your new one. You should first copy the folder onto Desktop and then transfer it into your new iPod. Remember to put your folder in the same exact place as your old iPod. If you are successful, you will see all your songs and playlists on your new iPod.

It is easier and faster to transfer songs from old iPod into new one manually. If you’re looking for help from third party software, then there are plenty of out there but most of them are NOT free. You should visit the download page for available software. Below is the list of free software:

Cancel Sprint Contract without Paying an Early Termination Fee

August 21st, 2006

I just noticed the following on my monthly statement: Sprint Logo

“Effective Oct. 1, 2006, Sprint will charge $0.15 per message for casual domestic and international text messages sent or received.
Sprint will charge $0.03/KB for casual data usage.”

According to Sprint’s terms and condition:
“If we change a material term of the Agreement and that change has a material adverse effect on you, you may terminate the Agreement without an early termination fee by calling 1-888-211-4727 within 30 days after
the invoice date of the first invoice you receive after the changes go into effect.”

I told my friend about this and he was successfully able to cancel his contract with Sprint without paying the early termination fee (ETF) while he still had 2 year to go on contract. You need to call Sprint before you pay your bill. If you pay your bill, you are “agreeing” to these new terms.

Microsoft Fixes a Glitch in Security Patch

August 20th, 2006

On Thursday, Microsoft fixed a glitch that was located in a security patch created to address flaw that was earlier attacked by worms. Once that patch is applied to the system, programs that demand abundant amount of memory, such as one gigabyte or more may be unsuccessful to start.

The security update known as 921883 (MS06-040) was only causing problems to computers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 based-x64, along with Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with SP1 (Service Pack 1). The issue only affects 32-bit programs such as Microsoft Business Solutions – Navision 3.7.

Dozen of security patches along with MS06-040 was released by Microsoft earlier this month. In fact, the faulty patch was labeled “critical” and urged users to apply it as soon as possible to be safe from hackers exploiting glitch that could allow a remote code execution. Similar security patch (MS06-042) was released and the MS06-042 caused Microsoft Internet Explorer to crash when viewing certain web sites. MS06-042 will be re-released on August 22.

First Blu-ray Recorder Will Not Play Protected Blu-ray Movies

August 12th, 2006

The new and first Blu-Ray disk drive released by Sony won’t be able to play protected movies that are under Blu-Ray format. Sony revealed its first Blu-Ray recorder, model number BWU-100A, at companie’s “Experience More 2006″ event this year in Sydney, Australia.

The recorder will only play content that is user-recorded high-definition from digital devices. The disk drive won’t play commercial movies that are under BD format. The drive will be released without its ability of movie playback support due to the software development and copy protection issues. Another major reason the Blu-ray disk drive won’t be compatible with protected movie because commercial movies are encrypted with High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), and to decrypt that, a user requires HDCP-compliant graphics card which will enable HDMI and DVI connections. However, that isn’t possible because there are no computers for sale that offer graphic card which supports HDCP.

Sony hopes it will crack the issue and allow its Blu-ray Recorder to play commercial movies in future. The disk drive with each single layer BD-R will hold about 25GB of storage and it has a write speed of 2x. The Blu-ray recorder will burn single and dual layer BD-R and BD-RE disks. It will be released later this month priced at $750 USD.

How to Shrink an AVI Video File

August 9th, 2006

MediaPlayer FileIf you have an AVI video file that you need to shrink, then you should re-encode it or degrade the quality of the AVI video.

But you have a few options that don’t require you encode the WHOLE video. All options use VirtualDubMod.

First, you can re-encode the audio. In VirtualdubMOD, go into Streams -> Stream List. If it’s an AC3 or MP3 audio file, you can demux that to wherever and encode it. For AC3, I use Besweet to transform it into a WAV format. If it’s 48 kHz be sure to downconvert to 44.1 kHz. The difference in quality isn’t noticeable and 44.1 kHz compresses a lot better than 48 kHz. For MP3, I just use DBpoweramp to convert to WAV. Since I just about always use Ogg audio for my encodes, I use Oggdrop XPd for my Ogg encoder.

Second, you can go to the beginning or end of the file and trim off a little bit. You can do this through search BY KEYFRAME (you will see some buttons that have little yellow keys). You cannot just trim however many frames you want. You can only slice off by keyframe.

Lastly, you can dump the AVI container and use an MP4 or MKV container. VirtualdubMOD can use the MKV container (my personal preference) and that will shave off a meg or two. If you use MKV, you can use AAC or Ogg audio (I prefer Ogg) and you can use AAC audio in MP4.

If you think VirtualdubMOD is too complicated, you can try t@b ZS4 Video Editor and it is free.
